Avoiding the weird people in the train/subway, yeah that happens here as well and I happen to be one of those weirdos lol, I'm kind of large (muscles, I look my a MMA fighter), I got a serious/expresionless look and a beard, I look a bit "scary" lol, I do notice some people avoid me, but it's not always the case. Usually other men are fine, but I do notice it's mostly women who usually do avoid sitting next to me and I understand it, I look a bit scary. Space is a concern, I admit, but I bet it's worse in Japan. Now as for myself, I don't like sitting next to others, that's why 90% of the time I prefer to just stand, I usually sit when I'm with friends who prefer to sit down. The odor thing: yes, I fully agree, different races do smell different, but I've kind got used to "the different smells", BTW asians do smell, they 100% do, my guess is this is due to diet. This country has 35% immigrants of people with immigrant origins, you basically get to experience "all races" (including some Japanese on some occasions). Now here, at certain hours and during some periods (summer mostly) our trains & subways smell bad, it's a sad reality how some people just don't bother with taking showers, yes it's disgusting and I don't think I'll ever get used to it, I just try to avoid taking the subway at those hours in summer.
