And vodka is accepted currency for orcs in Ukraine

They are not allowed to. Subordinate officers are not supposed to make decisions, they are just midldemen and tell soldiers to do what the orders are no matter what.

The ceaucescu woman said she had nurtured people as if they were her own. I think the reply was that she was a dragon mother that would eat her own offspring.

Maybe you know it as french fries. Delicious but you should use ghee to fry them rather than seed oil which is used for too long before being replaced.

@marcpritchard3307 I heard the best russian brand was ”oligarch vodka”. I think Swedish Absolut sold well, at least where people had money. The Stolichnaya brand is no longer russian.

There are other metrics which could be useful like what percentage has reached a certain level of understanding their language. This metric is different for different countries. It takes longer for Danish children than Swedish to reach a certain level and the reason is that it’s difficult to understand when one word ends and another word begins in Danish.

@ДмитрийВолков-ю1ц i think only raw oil now, no refined products. Pretty sure actually

There is a joke from soviet time that says that the worst neighbour you can have is a socialist because that person will count every single potato you put in your mouth.

@volkerr. I drink very little and I don’t think we have it in Sweden. In America i noticed lots of ads for a small pirog called ”Gorby”. Then I found it came from Sweden. Quite good and I respect Gorbachev. Stolichnaya is OK because it is no longer a russian brand and the owner doesn’t want to buy any ingredients from russia.

ZhovtoBlakytniy That’s soviet mentality which is still alive and well

I like this video and I remember you mentioned the importance of first observers in russia since you can’t trust reported values, especially aggregated ones. The same was dome in the book ”The Undercover Economist” where the author looked at very basic facts. It explained why students don’t need to cheat, the teachers do this on their behalf. The better grades, the more you earn as a teacher in some countries.

I think a substantial percentage of the potatos grown is used to make vodka. In russia, it is completely legal to own and use a small distiller to make vodka. And they do, I have seen at least two videos showing dacha life where these people made vodka which was completely normal.

@davidmann1871 I love such metrics that are cheap, easy to do and not subject to interpretation. Of course, what you really want to know is how the brain develops and that is a tad harder. Anyway, this is a good metric to see how a country develops.

ZhovtoBlakytniy Maybe you know better than me. Much to my embarrassment, I didn’t understand what happened there and I was happy to buy delicious Romanian ham. After the Ceaucescu’s met their ancestors and I learned what I should have known I felt guilt.

Yes, they don’t use seed oil. Better to use ghee. Heston Blumenthal showed the ideal way to make french fries. Worth watching if you want stellar french fries.

@markfischer3626 I think peanut oil is a good choice. It’s important to understand that the oil is important for a good result. You experiment with different kinds which you should as an engineer. I’m also an engineer and found it worthwhile to tweak some recipes to see what you get. It can be disastrous but you learn and make progress. I have never tried chicken oil but I would like to try it out. These days I make my own Kombucha and I have found some tweaks that give better produce. Too bad there are no cheap magnetic stirrers to be found in Sweden.

@markfischer3626 I now remember the Heston Blumenthal film that I saw on TV. Not only did he show how to make perfect french fries, he also explained the chemistry that goes on. What ypu want is a creamy inside and a crispy shell. He broke one apart and you could clearly see what he meant. This procedure means that you have to fry twice. What I really like about hos programs is that he does a lot of explanations which I appreciate as an engineer. I’m sure you will appreciate his videos for the same reasons. Sometimes he has done the exact opposite of what you should do. The result is sometimes appalling but he explains very well where things went wrong. Mashed potato is what I remember best. Done correctly, it is absolutely delicious. Done incorrectly you get wallpaper paste.

Yes, I wrote that too. It’s legal to own and operate small distillery equipment in russia and I’m pretty sure they are as common there as saunas are in finland where even studio apartments have 1 person saunas.

That is a nice thing to do. It is special to eat vegetables that you have grown yourself. I have managed to grow an avocado which is now ~4dm high. It will take a long time before it can produce a fruit most likely to taste bad but if it does, I will enjoy it for sure.

Yes, fundamental realities is what we need to understand what happens there.
