  1. I saw a video showing how former east Berlin had transformed after the Berlin wall fell and it was beautiful to see. Much to my surprise there were comments in russian and most of them lamented the loss of a paradise. O what a dream it was for them to be in est Germany. An absolute paradise compared with russia. Not a single one said something like ”I really liked it during soviet times but I now see that it and life can be so much better”. Not a single one

  2. Funny, I also used to buy a copy to read when travelling. I even subscribed in spite of being an Engineer rather than an Economist.

  4. Hi Mark. I have a Masters degree in Engineering and about your age.Maybe I should have become an economist because I love math and that’s what an Economist has to to understand. Accountants only need basic Algebra. I have noticed something that seems to have escaped The Economist and that is that the russian economy and society are being sovietised. During soviet era, their economy was horrible. Sure, there were those that benefited from this and that was the siloviki, some of which made comet careers and had a very good time indeed. I saw a video showing how they enjoyed themselves in Crimea, much like the photo you describe which I haven’t seen. I have no reason to belive these people are gullible fools that don’t understand this. I think there’s some other reason. Somewhat related, I saw on FoxNews that some server had been breached and sensitive data like emails had been leaked to media, that’s what I would have written had I been a journalist with no hidden agenda. But FoxNews wrote that data had leaked to liberal media. One may wonder what purpose those two words served.
