  1. This is too abstract for me. I get the idea of growing others and letting “see it”, but how? How do you train them? How do you point out things to “see”?

  2. As someone on the spectrum, pretending to be talkative and enthusiastic is one of the most difficult part of interviews. I took job offers even though it's not my first choice because I cannot keep going on interviews anymore. This hits hard.

  4. The issue is the coding questions in the first round from FAANG are the same across all levels. Senior and higher level will have a hard time solving textbook algorithm questions because we haven't touched that for a long time. E.g. we all know what heap sort is, how it works and the time complexity, but to write one with fast speed might fall short. Leetcode is definitely necessary in that sense. I don't think the textbook questions should be the questions for senior engineers but it is the fact now and have to accept it.

  5. They need to have a better criteria for managers. A bad manager can do a lot of damage to the team members, or the company. It's also very hard to get that feedback.

  6. You think any company gives a shit other than amazon? This is the world we live in. He gives great advice on how to live in this cold world and if you cannot adapt, then you are not gonna survive. Simple as that.

  7. You just don't let the company control you. If they give you pressure, learn to push back, esp against bad managers.

  8.  @aadityakiran_s  They are all like that. Some of them do in a milder way and give you some candies after, and some other do in a bad way. Obviously we don’t like that but its a matter of what you can tolerate and what you get from that

  11. Hi Steve, I joined a new company 2 years ago. Since joining, I've been regularly asking my manager for feedbacks. He always told me, I am doing great, and I just need to keep doing what I am doing. At the end of year, I was excited for my review, and found out it is a passing grade with zero exceeding. I also have tried to get more engagement with the product design and asked for more responsibilities and to be included in conversations, and he always said he agrees, but nothing was improving and I am still not included in conversations and many times clueless of what is going on, and I am always given trivial work. I've also talked to him about promotion since I had been in the industry for 10+ years. First time he said we don't do promotions unless you have been here for long and make large influence, which is arguably fair but I also feel stuck since I believe I have the capability to go to the next level, and I would have to wait longer in the team by the sound of it. Plus I am not making as much influence as I wanted because I was often given trivial work instead of opportunities for influential work. What should I do? I talked to him multiple times about the points I mentioned above already, and I have not seen any actions being done from his end.

  12. I am one of those who don't have imposter syndrome. I feel undervalued. Because of my personal issues, I changed my jobs a few times, it was hard to build my reputation in a company and get promotion, and I am not good at negotiation. I have been senior eng for quite a few years now and definitely don't want to stay as one forever like many in our industry. Do you have any suggestion in how to build personal connections, reputations, gaining cross team experience and negotiation for promotion?

  19. As a senior eng, I've had some interviews with some companies which are not impressed by me saying "I don't spoonfeed junior engs". To me an engineer needs to learn to solve the issue on their own. Somehow some companies don't do that way.

One questions though - what happens if your current work does not provide you with the opportunities to operate at a broader scope, being that, e.g. managers do not engage you in design discussion, or other teams handle it, and you are unable to take more responsibility? Any approach other than just finding another job?
