Not to mention honestly now in Ukraine where you consider the fact that, as we’ve seen with examples on the Russian side of things blowing up, just how fragile these armoured vehicles really are with so much equipment focused around the toilet area rather than being more spread out. Sure, with district design it does mean more people can get out of the top at one time if needed, but it also means if you can fire something from above then it would also take out three fourths of the crew all at once. As you see in Ukraine it is now much easier to take out a tank with modern ATGMs and I very much doubt (based on what I’ve seen here) that the US has bothered as much as the UK, Germany, Japan and South Korea have in continuously upgrading their tank models. It seems like the training on these older ones wouldn’t be as much of a stretch as the US seems to be continuously making it out to be, so perhaps they shouldn’t be so pigheaded about it and actually send these over to Ukraine already.

Bloody hell that is just freaking horrific. I was seriously about to ask what kind of decade you were having to do tanker training in, until I saw at the bottom you said ‘2016’.😰 Is this in the US Army? Because I’ve got to tell you my dad was in the British Army and he witnessed some very rough treatment from the instructors but even that wasn’t at this level. These kinds of cruel treatments, although obviously still being tough, went out quite a long time ago. Our army is still very tough as needed to make sure we can compete as the best in the world, but we also are trying to be aware of the psychological impact of training and how that can impact negatively on a soldier both during and after the time of service. Problems with bullying still remain within the army especially among more other soldiers but not from instructors. If an instructor or Drill sergeantDid what you described here he would most definitely be written up. In terms of coping with stress though during training and also being in a tank, the rumours about our units is definitely true. Tea absolutely works. It’s sort of done in a way to compartmentalise the work in the British Army. We even have kettles that can be plugged into the inside of our tanks that are specially designed to be able to internally boil the perfect cup of tea so you can work ‘and be calm’ at the same time when needed.

Yeah well the general public I think were more asses back then and didn’t really understand trauma as much, which is weird because in Europe we had already come to understand the trauma that soldiers and frontline workers go through already for decades before that.

I know this follows them over the course of the training, so it is unlikely that this episode was made according to events in eastern Europe, but it does feel frankly like this video was released in response to the current war in Ukraine and what it must be like to work inside of a battle tank. Even if the tank in question is quite different to that of the US model. Quite frankly though looking at this, after everything the US has been boasting about for the past two months, I really don’t see anything in this tank that looks much more advanced than that in the T-72 all the way to the T-90 Russian tank. I think frankly the US is just scared that they are going to be judged by their constituents for giving away US weapons even though frankly these tanks aren’t anything to shout about by comparison to the greater power of a fighter jet, which also should be sent to Ukraine right now. More likely the US just doesn’t want to go to the bother of having to restock them or is concerned about the Russians perhaps stealing them and copying the design somehow if they get the chance. So it might be less so that the US is concerned about how long it would take for Ukrainian tank crews to train on them, and more of the US just thinking about itself and somebody else getting hold of the full design for its tank and making a cheap copy. Based on what I’ve seen here, the US could and definitely should just send these tanks over to Ukraine already as based on this, if the crew already has experience with working with thanks long enough, they could probably learn how to use the Abram M1 in just a couple of weeks and would be ready to go. They probably would struggle with a bit more time though on the British Challenger 2 though. That tank is far more advanced than the US tank (especially if you consider the upcoming Challenge 3) with only two or possible three others in the world that could match it on a head-to-head battle.

Damn that it’s just not fair at all. Although I’d imagine you guys would get a lot more respect if you had drones to help with your scouting, much like forces over in Ukraine right now. It would make your job so much easier and a lot safer.

Based on all of this then, do you think this might explain in some ways why the US has been still so reluctant for some reason to send even its older M1 tanks to Ukraine? Based on what I’ve seen here of these tanks, compared to things like the T-80 and T-90 even though it’s a different internal set up, they don’t really seem all that impressive and if you were to take a more basic one they are not that much of a stretch beyond the Russian tanks and it feels frankly like the US is just making up excuses when it comes to training Ukrainian fighters. Looking out these tanks, if they got some Ukrainian crews that have already got experience on tanking, they could probably train them within a couple of weeks on these and get them over to Ukraine where they are needed ASAP. Do you think it could actually be perhaps that, as you said, these tanks might actually need more maintenance than the Ukrainian cruise could keep up with or are worried that the US could face some sort of embarrassment if they weren’t to last as long as they would like to advertise? That or perhaps they are just more thinking about themselves and are worried that somehow Russia is just going to capture one of them and make a cheap copy of it and then it will somehow be out of the US military control on the design?
