I am travelling in Japan right now and although everybody is wearing masks (which is not unusual at all in Japan at this time of the year) i feel actually far safer in Japan than i am in Europe (where i am from) . Japanese have a natural tendency to wear masks which will certainly avoid the virus to spread, and to clean their hand thoroughly with antiseptic gels and wipes. The only thing which worries me in Japan is the metro and trains, because you breathe the same air as everybody else, but then again Japanese wear masks so i still feel far safer breathing though a mask myself as well in a Japanese subway or train rather than in a French, British, German one where nobody wears masks and nobody carries antiseptic wipes and gel to clean their hands.
I am not worried at all about the Olympics, i will be in Tokyo again this summer and will enjoy them. Japan is the champion country of getting over adversity and i am sure the 2020 games will be an utter success and will go flawlessly. I may not be all in favour in Japan ragarding many things (especially when it comes to the way animals are treated in this country , i am a vet ) , but when it comes to thorough organization and coordinated effort to insure flawless execution of any task, Japan can teach the world a lesson.
When it comes to the Olympic Games , rather than the Corona Virus , i am more worried of the heat . Japan and Tokyo are incredibly hot and humid in summer, even by Japanese standards , and the heat and humidity is rising every year, so i think that the danger will come more from athletes and tourists getting heatstroke rather than contracting a deadly virus.
I do hope people are not going to be stupid and think that Japan is more dangerous because it is closer to China or amalgam the two countries. Japan is closer to China geographically, but we live in 2020 and any country on the planet is only a few hours flight away from the next. I am actually more confident in the safety of Japan due to the fact this is an Island nation which limits population flux to planes and ships where it can be controlled. Rather than European countries where anybody can go over the border without any checkpoint and millions of people cross borders in a daily basis with trains and cars , just to go to work and tourist can travel the whole continent with a railway pass.
Personally being from Iceland i know that islands are safer than mainland nations .
Japan made one massive mistake though by not shutting down the airports and maritime ports to all flight and shipment from or passing through China the second they found out about the virus . And because it coincided with the Chinese New Year (The biggest celebration in China) Japan was flooded with Chinese tourists who came to visit Japan and many Chinese residents in Japan also went back to China to celebrate with their family, and then came back to Japan. This is what caused the outbreak and Japan could and SHOULD have stopped that by not making capitalism go first and try to think about people rather than money. That was Japan's biggest mistake regarding this virus . Maybe it is time Japan understand that this is not all about money and that people have to come first. Well actually animals and the planet should come first and people second, but definitely not money.
Capitalism will lose when facing nature , because our planet doesn't function based on economy , and if we prioritize economy over biology , we will lose the game. That is why i don't even blame Chinese people for the spread of the virus in Japan. I 100% blame the Japanese government who could have stopped it but didn't do anything. The official people who didn't shut down the airports are the ones who can avoid getting contaminated, because they don't take the trains, they don't get the bus or taxis and use their own car with driver and their own private plane, so they knew that by even keeping the borders open to avoid bad relationships with China, and letting the virus in, they would not be exposed. They are the ones who sacrificed the people for money and geopolitics. So unlike most Japanese people and most people in general, i do not blame the Chinese.
The funny part is that now mask manufacturers are becoming billionaires , so somehow it will bring money to Japan, since now it is impossible to find any mask in the country and there is a few weeks waiting list to order them. And the few stores which still sell them can only sell one box or one mask per customer. So someone is going to become filthy rich thanks to the virus.
Personally i am only concerned by the hundreds of millions of animals which are being tested on in China and Japan now to find a cure. These are the real victims and nobody talks about them. And they are pointless victims because we know that testing on animals doesn't mean at all that it works on humans. But i trust China to have no problem at all to "find" human test subjects. Probably among the Uyghurs population.
Anyway i'm off to Kittyland to get presents to my kids !
