Bears generally have very hard heads.  I knew a friend who was beyond O.C.D. regarding bear hunting.  He was bow hunting black bears in Manitoba CAN.  He was in a tree stand or similar and hit a black bear with an arrow.  The bear looked around and located him in a tree.  The bear charged up the tree trunk and my buddy emptied a .357 magnum "at" this head.  Only 1 round stopped the bear which was through his eye.  The other .357 rounds mushroomed his skull.
