  2. @Nancy L My friends have chickens, as did I until I recently moved from the country to town. One couple lives in Alaska, the other couple lives in Sweden. Neither couple use supplemental heat for their chickens. They do have a good coop and lots of straw in the boxes. Hearty chickens can be perfectly fine in sub zero temperatures. They do not lay as many eggs in winter due to less daylight. Yes, food and water should always be plentiful. My Alaskan friends feed their chickens warm mash in the colder months. It just depends on the breed. I'm 64 and had chickens to care for since I was a kid.
