You can't allow a private individual (even 100 of them) to block e.g. a much needed cross country railway service, or some other piece of critical infrastructure. He'll receive the market rate for his business, and he can open another shop half a mile away with the proceeds from the sale. Out of respect, it should be market rate plus 50% for the anguish

  42.  @jaredbowhay-pringle1460  Owning race horses doesn't preclude passion for football, it doesn't even mean that racing was prioritized over football; moreover, man utd had their most successful period under said race horse owners, who expanded international distribution and merchandising massively (especially across Asia). They invested and improved club facilities (including Old Trafford) in their journey from good to elite, all of which mostly undermines anything you're likely to retort with. I love Fergie, but without sound upper management, very little can happen.

  44. @Maxwell Boyne businesses selling for 50k might have an annual turnover of roughly 80k, but i think burger vans around football grounds would make even less than that, since my example is of businesses that run all year round, so i think 60k is closer. Take out running costs, employee wages, taxes; bearing in mind it's only home matches and the end of season break is nearly 3 months long, net profit is probably about 15k, annually. For 20 vans you're looking at 300k per year, on the high end. That 300k is 1 week's salary for 1 top player, and it took a year to earn it. Chump change

  46.  @theram4320  The interest rates are baked into the mortgage liabilities. 1/4 of your salary went on the mortgage in the 30 years post WWII, and now it's nearly 3/4. Everything else is window dressing and obfuscation.

  49.  @annother3350  In 2000, the market already had several portable mp3 players that interfaced with windows. By 2001 the ipod was released which could hold 1000 songs. Minidisc was barely any better than buying a portable CD player and ripping your own songs to CD-R via your PC. I used to buy a whole spindle of discs (25+ CDs) for the price of 3 minidiscs.
