CO2 is a myopic (and therefore wrong) metric to use in gauging pollution (forgetting that the half life of some of these radioactive waste compounds are over 100,000 years, longer than human civilisation). Building a nuclear power plant is one of the most energy intensive undertakings any entity can engage in, and so extracting NET POSITIVE energy (safely) from these things is a bigger challenge than having renewable energy infrastructure.
