simona halep is romanian, is active on the tour and is a former wimbledon champion. you only have to go back to 2014 to find a chinese major winner (Li Na), but to find an English one it's 100 years on the men's side and 50 years on the women's EDIT: 99% of people commenting are not tennis fans. why don't u guys all go back to your tea and crumpets?

Brits are co-opting her success and actually undermining her achievement by suggesting she's only great because she went to school here. If being here was advantageous for a career in tennis, we'd have more stars. When you consider you have to go back nearly 100 years (at least on the men's side, and nearly 50 years on the women's) to find an English champion, it's clear this country does not produce tennis stars; to call it a win for Britain is to co-opt something you've no right to. Just enjoy her without trying to co-opt her for some nationalistic agenda. I don't think most people understand that England is about as good at Tennis as Canada is at football (soccer), which is to say they're not bad, but they certainly aren't good. I'm really not exaggerating

@davidcopplestone6266 saying that England sucks at tennis is rather like saying tortoises don't move very fast; a fact. To call it a "phobia" (an irrational fear) is the height of stupidity.

racists aren't "woke". you're getting your concepts mixed up

@deegee8645 i'm not doing anything for the disempowered of non whites. i'm just a guy with a computer. I'm here to tell people they should cherish Emma without co-opting her successes in some nationalist agenda

@simplelife88393 how many anglosaxons are picking up tennis majors? i count none

@davidcopplestone6266 apparently you neither know the meaning of 'phobia' nor 'immigrant'. Anybody who is here, but was born in a foreign nation, is, by definition, an immigrant. 99.9% of Americans were born in America, not Canada or anywhere else. I love Emma's presence in tennis, but be her fan without co-opting her or her success. You people have very nonsensical notions of race, ethnicity and nationality; these concepts are clearly defined, and the average Brit is incapable of using any of the aforementioned words correctly. It wouldn't even matter if you weren't all so keen to ignore all the other parts of who she is and just credit Britain. It's revealing of either inherent xenophobia or a kind of scarcely veiled ardent nationalism, and not the kind that's respectful of other cultures.

@langraman8756 really? Interesting, if true

@bob1784free that's not the bleeding definition. Anglo-Saxons invaded 1000 years ago and are far from indigenous to Britain.
