  9.  @tarwingrill4531  They used the Millet system, i.e. everyone governed them but paid tribute, and to be honest, that tribute was pretty good value since the locals could never muster a force equivalent to the Ottoman armies (this was true for 600 years). That's why nobody speaks Turkish other than Turks (in the main). All the Balkan churches were left in pristine condition, and their populations remained Christian.
