  1. there is no place they could take her outside of the arctic that has ringed seals. that pup was WAY further south than it was supposed to be. We had a similar thing in NZ last year when an emporer penguin showed up here. best we could do was feed it up and send it packing south.

There are no indigenous venomous snakes in the US with round pupils." a bit late on the reply, but this is not accurate. in fact, it's only the pit vipers than have the vertical pupils as venomous snakes in the US. the other groups do not. example: coral snakes.

  6.  @sarahs.5289  We live on an isolated island. there is simply no way to relocate the captured stoats to anyplace where they belong. so yes, they are euthanized. that's the reality. If we didn't trap them, there would be no more Kiwis. As it is, we may still lose this fight. most kiwi species are in decline at this point, sadly.

  7. dislikes might come from people who abhor stoats for the damage they do to native wildlife and agricultural species like chickens. looks are deceiving. being cute doesn't make you not a horrible pest, unfortunately.

"I don't think we have them here in New Zealand" being a fellow Kiwi, I have to correct you here. we DO have them in New Zealand, but they very much do not belong here, and are the single largest threat to our northern kiwi bird species. in fact, they singlehand...pawed? wiped out about 70% of kiwi numbers all by themselves over the last 50 years or so. they are very illegal to sell or trade or even own here as a pet species. extremely destructive!

You seem much like the secular scientists that told Jane Goodall to number her chimps instead of naming them because they're not human and don't have emotions or minds." actually, that's not the reason. the reason is not because of the animal's behavior, but because humans have a tendency to project bias. numbering your subjects helps prevent that bias, because we tend to personalize when we give things names. in the end though, it matters little since both replication (large numbers), and peer review tend to even out those biases. still, it's generally recommended good practice to have an independent and consistent naming scheme, whether numbers or some other consistent label.

  12. you people are idiots. public facilities are NOT SUPPOSED to share private information. The vet tech was clearly told never to share private information about carer names and locations. makes perfect sense. some people are nuts and will try to break into a carer's home to steal the animals. and you people are ignorant. Hell, even hateful. I have seen comments here that border on physical threats being said towards the vet tech! you all should be ashamed.

  13. true story. I had exactly this happen to me when I was diving in French Polynesia. I won the ensuing fight for my mask though, and it ended up in the pot for that night's dinner.
