It was called "the civil war" or somesuch... but then the worst president in US history (who remarkably resembles Trump, btw, Ie a complete narcissistic idiot), pretty much let all that death and destruction be for nothing, and spent much needed capital rebuilding the South and basically letting them make their own laws, which ended up being the Jim Crow era. so while it would indeed be an experiment where half the US would become the fastest country to become dependent on global charity to avoid starvation, there will always be somebody that would do their best to prevent it, to the detriment of all.
