"The electorate doesn't care enough" ...and that is exactly why I left the US, after 45 years and two advanced degrees, after 5 generations. not because of the right wing nutjobs, it was because the left had its collective head in the sand, and refused to believe the warning signs. And that was BEFORE Obama got elected. I saw this coming after W got re-elected. no regrets, but of course I also saw my new homeland ending up the same way after about 20 years. turns out the pandemic sped that up by a couple of years. current government is privatizing everything, selling off our public education system, trying to destroy the treaty with the people who owned this place when Europeans first arrived. Same exact thing happening here. the world is being filled with narcissists, who lean heavily right wing authoritarian. historically, these personality types also volunteer to be soldiers, so their numbers were never as high as they are now. there is the problem. we have to deal with the fact that there is now a HUGE proportion of EVERY population that leans heavily right wing authoritarian. perhaps the largest absolute number that has ever existed on earth. Typically, they got sent off to war and that kept their numbers physically low, but at this point, we have to move beyond that. start realizing we have distinct personalities that DO NOT respond to even basic information in the same way, and just deal with it.

@Geek37664 You know what the very first thing Obama did after he left office in 2016 was? he joined the organization that was trying to bring the GoP gerrymandered districts to court, to break up the GoP monopolies they had illegally formed. He saw the damage it was doing, but it was already too late to stop it, unfortunately.

John Stuart Mills famously wrote about this regularly to warn the early democracy forming in the US not to succumb to the tyranny of the majority. it has been a constant fight ever since. which the US has finally lost, and it wasn't even the majority in this case. it's completely tail wagging the dog.

Look, you need to understand something. JD Vance was quite literally CREATED by Peter Thiel. Peter Thiel thinks the world would be far better off if it was run like a rich libertarian from the 1890s would. You know, the people directly responsible for the Great Depression. so if JD become POTUS, the clock has just turned back over 100 years, and we all will be celebrating the centennial of the GD... by living it over again. This is 100% truth. Thiel has been working hard to try to destabilize democracies all over the globe for over 20 years now.
