Once you're a witness you are under the “Rule of Sequestration” which means that no witness can be in the court while another witness testifies nor can that witness be in court prior to the time they are to testify. Also, they are not to interact with any of the other witnesses at all; they are literally individually and discretely sequestered. This way, Manuel Mata would not be able to harass any of the defense witnesses; or secretly film or ‘audit’ in the courtroom; nor would he be able to harass or verbally assault or intimidate Dean's parents on their way in and out of court.. It was a very strategic move from the defense. They understood where they were in the game and the type of judge they had. It's called “Lawfare”
