Trump's been a media presence since the 1980's. He's been interviewed by Oprah, Letterman, Kimmel, had his own successful reality competition series going back a dozen years, had his name on a board game, ice cream bars and even appeared in a "Home Alone" sequel. How much of that kind of exposure has Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio or Dr. Ben Carson had? This is why people feel they know Trump (though it's mostly been as an entertainer- and, yes, he has been entertaining), and the other Republican candidates can't compete with that kind of recognition. And (unlike his competitors) Trump has nothing to lose, so he can court the votes of people who actually appreciate hearing someone who sounds as xenophobic and intolerant as they are. But this also makes him terribly frightening because we don't know how much of this hard line of his is entertainment, and how much of it reflects what he actually thinks. It's not worth the risk.
