I have no doubt that a lot more went into your upbringing than just spankings. Spankings in and of themselves don't teach anything but fear, which surely can cause children to "obey". But spankings don't teach communication skills or reasoning, and are punishment rather than consequences. I can guarantee that prisons are filled with criminals who were spanked. Spanking is not a guarantee to making children grow up to be law abiding citizens. It's interesting how comments about spanking are almost always extreme, as if there are only two options - spanking or letting kids run wild with no rules whatsoever. There is an in between and it's much more appropriate than either of those extremes.
