  4. The mindset of finding savings is suggesting that making cuts is more important than making improvements. The mindset of investment is alien to politicians. Listen to EveryDoctor and the people working in the service, rather than imposing top-down symbolism that has always failed the service.

  6. I'm with you, Richard. The "centre" has consistently moved to the right (possibly to enable neoliberalism). The High Court has ruled that the government acted illegally in changing the boundaries of peaceful protest by statutory instrument. Lord Walney is also associated with Labour Friends of Israel and makes regular trips to said country. His report lacked any discussion with activist groups. Hardly impartial and each of these points you note could enable fascism. The door is open to the far right to step in and offer fake solutions to people's disgruntlement. We live in dark times.

  11. Reeves is wrong on two counts imo. 1) Creating new money to invest in state projects (infrastructure and green energy for example) will promote growth. Going cap in hand for corporate investment won't - it will lead to the extraction of profit through rent (PFI contracts being a prime example). 2) Inequality stifles growth. Put money in the pockets of the average worker and they will spend it in the economy; put it in the bank accounts of the wealthiest and they will either move it offshore or buy assets to rent back to us at an extortionate price and boost their own wealth. Stopping the winter fuel allowance for some pensioners instead of increasing the windfall tax on energy companies or taxing wealth (as proposed by the patriotic millionaires) shows an inclination to pander to corporate wealth and inequality. A sure formula for low growth.

  21. A great speech outlining a transformative manifesto. Growth would be an automatic by-product. The danger is in the pushback from Londongrad and the financial markets, currently pulling the strings. The good fight would be hard, but worthwhile for the benefit of society and the survival of the planet. The neoliberal establishment would resist because of pure greed. If Starmer even made a start on this, I would see a ray of hope.

  42. The key factor of financialisation can't be over-emphasised, as Grace Blakeley articulates in her book Vulture Capitalism. When companies go public, their emphasis is on financial markets, leading two of the largest companies (Apple and Pfizer) to spend more on share buybacks than on R&D. Banks also spending more effort and resource on speculation, rather than on direct investment, results in the most dangerous "blob"...i.e. the financial one.

If we really want to improve the country, do the opposite and upset the hard right loons, who would limit such opportunities to the privileged few. We are becoming more insular by the day.
