When the Tories make a promise, expect the exact opposite: levelling up...
262
Some expect a miracle or adult leadership from the man who wanted to direct funding to richer areas from poorer ones. The man who presided over shrinking trade and a drop in real incomes. The man reluctant to tax windfall profits while increasing National Insurance for every individual - hitting the poorest hardest. May I heartily recommend critical thought and a dose of realism, while getting ready for more austerity.

She'll get us moving: in the wrong direction, over the cliff edge.
173
Always loved Omid's humour. Now I respect his values and his humanity. A great soul.
160
Well, Joe, Israel's action is against the law. How about talking to Bibi? How can this be anti-semitic when Jewish people join the protest?
159
By what stretch of imagination can someone judge that "Boris has done such a good job?" The man is an abject disaster.
147
How could he accuse Mr Integrity, Professionalism and Accountability of talking rubbish. Let's be fair, they are both Tories, ergo they talk horseshit.
115
I would find more honesty in her being asked how it feels to be part of a f***ing useless government.
111
The required reform is simple: stop MPs from taking secondary paid jobs. Also stop paid lobbying. Wonder if that cropped up in the debate?

"Israel feels threatened!" Threatened that they can't get their own way without the support of compliant governments? Threatened that we will call out their slaughter? Do they doubt that Palestinians feel threatened?

When caught out, Johnson promises just enough to be seen to do something. Then when the heat dies down, he does nothing, or the opposite of what he had promised when under pressure.
90
Many of us have heard of the Tory (ex-Etonian) affinity with pigs. Historical note: the lauded creativity of Peppa pig happened while we were EU members. At least Johnson found his intellectual level.
87
"Win the battle against inflation" by driving some into poverty and homelessness, while shareholders and execs get record rewards to increase their wealth. Fiscal austerity increases inequality as the rich will never let a crisis go to waste.
72
"Come together" while banking bonuses are now uncapped, non-doms have tax exemptions and the banking levy is reduced from 8% to 3%.
62
"Confronting challenges." Who will pay for that, Rishi? btw. still waiting for a "stronger NHS..."
58
Hardly a shock after 14 years of Tory fiscal and operational incompetence. But if he is setting us up for more austerity under Tory fiscal rules, he should get a new chancellor with transformative policies. The choice of picking on pensioners instead of taxing wealth or hitting profiteering energy companies, was pathetic and vindictive.
57
Inevitable when we live in an elective dictatorship with a minority-elected government. Britain is not a democracy when the proportion of votes that would vote this government out actually give them seats in the commons. 56.4% of votes for all other parties have produced 56% of seats for the Tories. The exact opposite of what we voted for.
57
Does anyone remember "integrity, professionalism and accountability?" Where does ignoring international and domestic law fit into that statement? A desperate little spiv hellbent on the road to fascism.
52
Thatcher wanted to take us back to Victorian values. Her party obviously knew what she meant: many now experience Victorian poverty.
51
Such hubris. George Useless showed no contrition on Marr this morning. No apology; still an insistence that the process needs changing. Sleaze is an ingrained Tory habit with Johnson's cabal in charge.
50
When a former banker becomes Health Minister, only to assume the role of a dictator.
45
No second jobs (other than in very exceptional circumstances where it is necessary to retain their profession, such as in medicine.) Second jobs often raise a conflict of interest. Also no paid lobbying.
45
I'll remember "no austerity" when we pay more for energy and lose our winter fuel allowance. You can't invest in public services to achieve growth by adhering to tax and spend. Total word salad...waiting for the budget.
42
A carbon capture plant that will process around half of one percent of the CO2 we create. Meanwhile licences to allow more dirty energy for sale on world markets, while we buy it at the international market price. Yes, Rishi is for profit while we pay through the nose.
36
She is correct: it's his shame. The fact that he abuses his power makes him pathetic scum.
33
For the fog of war, read the lies and propaganda of war. At least this report seems like a honest attempt at factual balance.
29
Pro-cars! Let me tell you about cars, after driving 30,000 miles a year on Britain's road network. The roads are jammed, ill-maintained and inefficient. Travel by train was preferable when possible, while I was working, albeit expensive. If the government wants to help road users, they should improve public transport to take some traffic off the roads. As for the emissions target, we need more rail travel.
26
We have a government that thrives on confusion, division and chaos. Don't fall for divide and rule. If we truly are a free country, we respect choice and not blackmail.
24
Can't fix the mistakes without accurately defining them, before finding effective solutions. Now we bring in someone who helped fuel the financial crash and seems wedded to austerity.
24
Who said that? Her job is international development and other options are available. Tax wealth, since we are DEFENDING (as in defence) the assets owned by the richest.
22
So many things I can't understand and have never experienced as a white male in my eighth decade. If only we could live the dream of the great Martin Luther King, focusing on the content of character. Interesting interview. Two great human beings in an enlightened discussion.
21
@guff9567 your pseudonym name is appropriate.
21
Responsible businesses will be responsible employers, looking after their employees. Greedy profiteers will exploit employees.
21
Such a "safe" and "welcoming" country, yet it offers a deterrent. Tory logic is hard to fathom.
18
Raising interest rates with cost push inflation is another form of austerity: people will be able to afford less. By definition, disposable income will fall and so will demand for essentials, which means some will suffer hunger and poverty. Controlling interest rates with price increases uncontrolled was, in the past, likened to a one-club golfer running the economy. Welcome to Tory Britain.
17
Johnson's "clarification" consisted of more erms, ahs and uhms than English words. That's the sign of a narcissist squirming. Cowardice and hubris; not clarification.
16
The kind of observation we need from a political leader: "I've seen no evidence of..." With such an incompetent in charge, we must have enormous international respect.
16
irony noted
15
Are you referring to America?
15
"Getting to the point." NEWSFLASH! The climate won't wait for us. Global warming must wait while we get to the point.. how reassuring!
15
How? The rail companies, on the other hand, have paid billions in shareholder dividends after taking taxpayer handouts. I submit that you are looking in the wrong direction.
15
Step up to whom? The EU is the most successful peace project in recent history and it takes a treacherous "friend" to sell out to Putin to threaten it. Stepping up for peace is something America has never understood.
15
So "a dignified resignation" consists of no contrition, and the repetition of the same lies and fantasy of the government's alleged "achievements." Which amount to serial f'kups.
14
Around 4% of the total population arrived in the last year? Really! Show your workings and source
14
@ihavebeenben Well Kermit the Ben, it's highly relevant. Tory austerity has cost lives yet they accuse strikers of risking such lives.
14
Huge respect to those who give up their time freely to save lives.
14
Actually both. And I support their action. Tory governments have taken the rip over the last 12 years.
14
@gambrydew2059 Sadly that's a mathematical fact. "Inflation down" simply means that prices still increase but at a slower rate. Inflation means prices going up; prices going down is deflation.
13
Prove your first statement, please. Or hide behind your pseudonym account.
13
Good question. Especially when 90% of vehicles are complaint.
