With in reality the splitting up of H2O though with Ionizing radiation at the most severe the body can't generate cells as effectively or at all including the most crucial the bloody supply, bone marrow essentially is damaged, can then later be given a bone marrow transplant but depends on first finding a suitable doner of course, and even still then its only a 50% chance it'd even work, but the other things there's not a massive great deal that can be done to the rest of the damaged DNA thats how dangerous Radiation Sickness can genuinely be (have to realise that with the chemicals that create a reaction in the reactor they split up particles to make heat...).
