The 'emblem' as you put it, is the clans crest, does mean By Land and By Sea in Latin yes, the Clans Crest with the hand (severed hand to be exact) goes back to a myth about the Clan the word or which ever in Latin called Proterra means For The Land, when a clan chief supposedly pitted his two sons against each other, who'd row to the isle ahead of them would succeed him, when one was getting so far behind he lopped off his hand (some say arm) with his sword and threw it on the isle, is also the basis of a Runrig song and the title track of Bruce Guthro's 3rd album with Runrig.
