I was born when the Shuttle went into what it did, when seeing Discovery in a museum when the Mission Commander and the Flight Commander remarked about what went on during a mission believe was STS-125 the last bit of ATC they did made me genuinely cry lol Reusing though a craft I thought that was incredible really, and using a material like Silica (is mostly air its comprised of) is a really rubbish conductor of heat, perfect for its use over aluminium I mean heck you put that material into a cooker at say 200c and it doesnt react well becomes dead soft lol let alone thousands of degrees C
