Also, look at the millions and millions of positions where tipping is not involved, (that's MOST jobs, btw) where American customer service is great. After she did her time in Indonesia she was extradited back to the US where she pled guilty in Chicago to conspiring to kill the mother (rather than first degree murder which it clearly was since she planned it for months). She was sentenced to 26 years a few months ago. I think her daughter is being raised by her mother's family now. With time served while awaiting trial and time off for good behavior, she could be out in 20 years. Her boyfriend/accomplice is still in prison in Indonesia, but he has the same court waiting for him whenever he's done with that time. Another sick detail of this case was she was allowed partial access to the trust fund she murdered her mother over to pay for her defense and later for baby expenses. She should never have seen a penny of that money.

I cringe whenever I hear some dweeb thanking a soldier or veteran for their "service" - they are employed by the government and receive regular paychecks, after all; they are not volunteering their service. The overgenerous lifetime benefits are bad enough, but when private organizations started giving military discounts, get in line first benefits, etc., etc. a few years ago it really made me queasy. Last year, I saw a bank that offered better mortgage rates to "our military heroes" - I don't even think that's legal as credit products are very heavily regulated to ensure everyone has equal access to them without discrimination. Regarding the bases in Germany, this has been a real interesting post, I learned a lot. I do think the bases are a sacrifice Germans make that goes back to the roles of the 2 countries in WWII and the post-war years and "to the victors belong the spoils" - maybe by the 100th anniversary of the war's end that kind of mentality will have faded, but for many (I'm from the first post war generation) it doesn't seem weird or exploitative at all as it helps to maintain the post-war peace and has been a success. Of course, pro-Putin Trump has been trying to dismantle NATO forever, but I don't think that's going to happen any time soon and I pray that nutcase is never let back on the national stage. Russia would have to produce a more Gorbachevs and fewer Putins before anyone was comfortable with thinking about a post-NATO world.
