I teach at uni and I would say every bit of this applies to uni students as well. I owned an international company for several years (sold it because dealing with software “engineers” - uni grads or self-taught that were poorly educated divas was enough). Too many schools concentrate on dumping unprepared students onto a compiler and telling them to write programs. I’ve been trying to build videos on topics like where to start writing a program, or structured programming, or OOP. However, you can’t make them watch the video (or all the video). Multiple times I’ve had students not watch more than half a video, only to do a task wrong and complain when points are deducted. I tell them that the program was completely demonstrated, and if they had watched the video completely it would have been an easy A. The biggest difference from the past was that a how to write programs/structured programming course was a prerequisite for all programming language courses. Now, students want to graduate in three years or less. They have fewer courses and less time to absorb those courses. Ok. Rant over. I absolutely agree with everything you say here - except I say it applies to both grads and self taught students.
