P-51s played a part in the Pacific later, once islands in range of Japan were secured, and the Japanese respected the P-51. The US also did evaluate the P-51 as a carrier fighter, and did carrier trials with a Mustang fitted with an arrestor hook. But it wasn't designed as a carrier fighter, and changes to make it better suited for that role weren't justified given the other options available (F6F, F4U, and more, even the late-model F4Fs were more than holding their own against the Zero). Spitfires fought in the Pacific from day one of Japan's opening moves. Hellcats were carrier fighters, in a carrier war however, and they were very cheap to build and easy to learn to fly with excellent overall performance.

@jeramysteve3394 aerobatic and racing pilots experience around 12G regularly. But G-force tolerance is also based on duration. the higher the G-force, the shorter time you can sustain it before blacking out. Aircraft in turbulence (including passenger airliners) and delivery trucks on a rough road can experience momentary shocks of something like 25G, but they are so fast most people never realize it, but for shipping our products by air, we have to perform shock testing up to 25G.

The F6F was not "un-aerodynamic shaped". You just don't know enough about aerodynamics.

in combat, I never remember hearing the sound of the rifles and machine guns, and we never had trouble communicating effectively (those next to you or using radios). That doesn't mean it isn't loud, and we had hearing loss. But in the moment, the human brain seems able to filter out certain sounds as needed.

Speed became a more important fighter characteristic than maneuverability in the 1930s. Japan just didn't get the memo. Speed dictates the engagement in a WW2 dogfight, and boom and zoom tactics can be used, along with wingman tactics, to negate any sort of maneuverability advantage. The AVG proved this handily, as did P-38 pilots once they learned not to dogfight, and use their speed and altitude advantages instead. Keep in mind, P-39s scored a lot of air-to-air kills in the hands of Russians, facing many of the highest scoring air aces in history. A lesser and much maligned airplane, that scored more aerial victories than Hellcats, against superior pilots than what the F6F faced.

F4U was designed and built in the 1930s, replaced the F6F, and later also replaced the F8F. Yet, the F6F gets all the glory. Also, the F4U-5 and F2G was a better fighter overall than the F8F. F4U-5/F2G could carry 4,000lb bomb/rocket load, could use radar, cannons or machine guns, plenty of external fuel, longer range, good climb, high speed, and was a great dive bomber and fighter. The F8F was a one-trick-pony, with very short range, and G-limited to 6-7Gs in dogfights. Suitable only for fleet defense. Since the US was on the Offensive in WW2 and Korea, not teh Defense, the F8F had no place. And the F4U could do everything the F8F could and more.

A single RPG can, and has, destroyed an entire tank (see Ukraine). Just not an M1 Abrams or other adequately modern tanks. But older and Russian tanks, heck yes.

@paulgee8253 Yes, and the P-51 was key to easier pilot training. The P-51 was very similar to the T-6 cockpit, and so transitioning was much easier than other fighters. F6F was well known for being easier to learn as well, but still lots of pilot accidents in the F6F as well.

@jacktattis yet the carrier trials for the P-51 were favorable. It had no trouble coming aboard nor taking off. It simply didn't offer enough capability over existing aircraft, and with jets on the horizon, to justify the time, cost, and effort to implement the design changes to the P-51 for carrier operations.

@jacktattis if you do a Basic google search you'll find an article from teh US Naval Institute that backs up everything I said. There are many other sources as well.
