@robertdickson9319 perhaps, but that had nothing to do with Hiyo surviving. it wasn't tough enough to survive US firepower regardless how light or armored it was.

@robertdickson9319 it's more a fact that the US either missed her, or just never got around to destroying her. Carriers were usually juicy targets though, and pilots who hit a carrier were given awards, so there was tons of incentive to hit them, even ones that had already been sunk in harbor. The fact Hiyo survived the war with a bounty on her is unexpected.

yes, the last bit of the pilots disregarding the rules of the test was dumb. but you have to consider this was about proving a point, to get support to develop aircraft and train pilots to perform a rule, and develop the aircraft, weapons, and techniques to make it work. it's never going to work if you don't try. You will never learn to hit a ship if you don't try.

it takes years to win because it also takes time to tool up industry, train a plussed-up military, transport that newly manufacture equipment and newly trained troops to the battlefield.

@doppelT_066 ah, fair point, I did not make that distinction, i was just listing U-boats on display.

fletchers....."splinter" protection? or shrapnel protection? Fletchers, nor the bombs thrown their way were made of wood. Just a bit of clarification.

@erichammer2751 Yes, I have heard of teh Mk14 torpedo. Do you know how to read? Did you even read my comment? Clearly not. Allow me to repeat part of what I said; "Not all of them, but a lot more than in recent decades." work on your reading skills if you want to have any hope of debating me (not that I disagree with you on the Mk14).

@MsZeeZed but the late model Bf109s were still very formidable aircraft even against top allied aircraft of the late war period. It wasn't a bad design, but it was short ranged and didn't suit what Japan wanted.
