This is what separates THG apart. He covers all the things we take for granted, all the things, people, and events whose impact on history we've forgotten. Topics which are far too easy for most people to completely overlook or foget.

could you imagine if those survived long enough into the future and archeologists found the wrecks and asked, "why were so many ships destroyed in one place I wonder?". How much you want to bet they would not be able to guess correctly as to the reason?

and in WW2, the planet was warmer than it is now.

sounds like someone needs to invent a simple low-cost process to turn desert sands into rougher sand grains. Some sort of accelerated water erosion tank process perhaps?

an engineer, all the products I work on we de-rate, and use conservative estimates. We know full well our customers are going to push what we design to its limit, so we design in extra margins we don't tell them about to ensure failures don't occur when they push the limits. In our industry, reputation matters, and we have built a reputation and reliability and dependability which does factor into customers buying from us over competitors. Also, believe it or not, overbuilding our designs a little also makes them cheaper to produce. Using less accurate and less expensive manufacturing methods forces us to change our design process. we don't optimize every detail, thus leaving us margins. We use safety factors, but also build in extra buffer on top of that. Always better in engineering to under promise and over deliver.

@johnnyliminal8032 not all desert sand is dust. you sift for the starting size or larger, that you want/need for the process.

they need to get Texas out of the water long term.

@MrWaalkman I'm assuming it's far enough in the future that most record of current civilization is lost in one manner or another.

@MrYAMAHA32177 and the Romans

@ParkerUAS I do this too rather often, also being right handed. But I also cut right handed and switch, and I also cut right handed and eat left handed. I also use the American method to cut all my meat before eating too, to switch once. Just depends on the meal and how I'm feeling that day. But the American way is my dominant method. Never realized before today what I was doing was mostly unique to Americans.

you should have included statistics on how much CO2 lawn care produces. watch peoples' heads explode.

DeRudio = inspiration for Gant (in "The Last Samurai")?

"The Ship of Theseus" proves that people were pondering the nature of preservation of historical objects even in ancient Greece.

makes me wonder if something like this might have helped inspire the Dune Sand Worms...

every self-respecting aviation enthusiast is familiar with NACA and their work. I've known of NACA since I was a kid. I know hundreds of people that know exactly what NACA did. You forget how popular aviation is.

the US gov implied the new B-21 could circumnavigate the globe on a single tank of fuel.

@jockellis not sure what point you were trying to make, but you don't seem to understand the nature of tolerances. Your point, if I understood it correctly, has nothing to do with my comment. Nor did you state what tolerances you use, and why.
1
@jockellis Ok, not sure why you felt I should know that. That is so specific to you.
1
@jockellis you didn't ask a question. you shared a pointless story.
1
@jockellis My aren't you just an egotistical self-absorbed narcissist... Ruin my life? ha! You're my entertainment.

I tried eBooks, and i switched back to physical books. EBooks are extremely convenient when waiting in line, or when travelling (wish I had eBooks when I was overseas). But they are just not satisfying in the way a physical book is. I prefer Mass Market Paperbacks for all novels, due to their convenient size, but the industry seems bent on eliminating them. I prefer paperback or hardcover for books of historical or educational content.

First to break the sound barrier, period, is more prestigious. Also, F-86 was a jet and fully functional airplane. X-1 was a rocket plane that needed a ride. So the records are distinct. F-100 gets the first production jet in level flight record, and the F-100 gets the first jet in level flight. F-8 is the first naval Mach 1 aircraft. Yeager was first, period (but with a rocket). Yeager was first in level flight (with a rocket), but Welch was the first in a jet, and the F-100 was the first jet in level flight. Crossfield in the D-558-II was first to Mach 2 (rocket), F-104 was the first jet to reach and sustain level flight at Mach 2. X-2 was first to Mach 3 (rocket). I believe the A-12 (later SR-71) was first jet to go Mach 3, but not 100% certain. X-15 was the first to reach Mach 4 and higher (rocket). All distinct records. And there are even more supersonic firsts and records as well.
