@maxspringfield many countries have nuclear weapons, like Pakistan, North Korea, etc. We don't treat them as equals. Energy? Russia doesn't have a monopoly on energy. Australia has energy, Iran has energy, UAE has energy, Canada has energy, etc. But are those countries treated as equals on the world stage to the US, China, etc? China has a severe lack of energy and is dependent on imports.

Russia only "earned" their spot by being a major player in WW2. Everything they've done since then proves they don't deserve that power. Nor has China earned theirs. UK, France, and others surely Have earned it though. NATO doesn't expand. Russia threatens destruction, and those nations flock to NATO for protection. They don't join until Russia threatens them. This is Russia's fault. NATO was on the verge of dissolution and degradation until Russia invaded Ukraine. Without a belligerent Russia, there was no need. But Russia just proved she is still a tyrannical dictatorship bent on murder and destruction.

"Although any amount of nuclear weapons is certainly a powerful deterrent and must be reckoned with." not really, depends upon your perspective. "Russia, which holds the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons in the world." who cares? once you have enough to destroy teh world, what goes does making more matter? and what good is a "deterence" where you kill yourself? Suicide is stupid and a bluff if ever there was one. Committing suicide is the exact opposite of what nations like Russia keep trying to achieve.
