the amount of nuclear waste generated thus far fits in a soccer field. and most of it decays in very short time scales, and most of it can be reused in new reactors and reduced to about 10% of its current volume and reduce its decay life still further.

@divat10 they said they corrected from Terrawatt Hour, to Megawatt. TWh to MW, not MWh.

@freddyfriend5462 Nuclear is profitable. it just takes 10-20yrs for it to pay itself off. Patience is not a virtue in this modern age. Also, newer technology can better enable lower cost smaller reactors built in higher quantities. Their implementation is much easier and lower cost. Some can even be used to turn existing power plants into nuclear (coal, gas, etc.), thus saving significant portions of the initial investment and time.

@freddyfriend5462 "Nuclear industry has never been profitable. " that german report is extremely sparse on data, only a few pages long, and spreads a lot of unfounded misconceptions and gross over generalizations in its conclusions. when was the last major nuclear powerplant built in the EU, and what was the state of Nuclear energy technology at the time? A more recent report in 2021 showed many nuclear power plants were in fact profitable without the need subsidies.

@renebach9583 "Fast reactor do not exist yet." multiple companies and countries developing solutions. practical EVs and their charging infrastructure didn't exist until recently either. and it took a rich eccentric businessman to get it going. Just need funding and gov support. You'll never get there if you never start. "This is idealistic thinking. Renewable energies are here (the video says 50% in D already)" and that's why Germany is having an energy crisis, and why Texas froze recently, etc. Renewables are not even CLOSE to meeting global needs. total pipe dream. Renewables are not dependable nor affordable. Nor are they "on demand" power. "Germany will be 100% renewal before the fast reactor tech will be operational." sure, because they demolished their perfectly good nuclear power. But France has been nuclear for decades, meanwhile renewables is still a pipe dream. Nuclear energy is ready now, renewables are not. I live in a climate nearly identical to Germany, and companies have tried many ties to use wind, solar, and hydro. The rivers aren't able to provide enough energy, and the wind is too unreliable and few turbines get built. And solar fields all get torn down after a few years by the energy companies. "And fast reactor are based on worrysome concepts and materials (e. g. liquid Sodium)." baseless fear mongering. Sodium is an essential element to human life.

26% of CO2 is from agriculture? did you know that lawns are THE most fertilized and irrigated crop in western nations? maybe we should be focusing on lawns instead? Think of all the mowers, trimmers, blowers, etc. being used on lawns.

proof of lunacy. nuclear is the ONLY "green" answer. but that's assuming climate change doom and gloom were scientifically true in the first place. Nuclear is still good either way, but doom and gloom is political BS.

the "climate change" freaks are a religious and political cult.

@tobene yes, because being Forced to switch is unAmerican, and wrong. Renewables are Not viable for many parts of the US and unaffordable for many as well. It's also anti-capitalist for the gov to manipulate the economy and tell people what they can/cannot buy (in fact, it's straight up socialist).
