They are standing up a laser battalion in the Army. Had lasers aboard warships for years now. Lots of anti-drone and base defense laser testing for over a decade now as well. at the current rate of progress, lasers will become common on all warships, many aircraft, and even ground forces.

@xmeda The US military has been testing aircraft mounted lasers for decades successfully, but at larger scales. And ship and vehicle mounted lasers at smaller scales. The lasers have enough energy to easily destroy a missile. The speed of light is far faster than even a Mach 6 missile.

The lasers can track the change in direction of a missile, and needs only very slight adjustments at range to track large position changes of the missile. Weapons grade lasers need mere seconds to burn through more "armor" than an effective air-to-air or SAM missile can carry. You have some interesting thoughts, don't get me wrong, but I don't see them being enough to stop the laser.

@johnparrish9215 Or, in a more simplistic strategy, you fly head long into a fight, as normal, in a flight of F-16s, and shoot down any missiles fired your way. I'm over simplifying, but you don't need stealth. If your trick works, why not do it already? with no current laser pods, why not sling infrared seekers at stealth craft right now?

@johnparrish9215 An infrared blinder, or vectoring infrared missiles onto enemy stealth aircraft with long wave radar? US planes have had such systems installed too (blinders).

@raywhitehead730 Your father's past doesn't change my argument in any way. Nor does having a father who worked in lasers confer that knowledge nor expertise onto you by way of genetics nor osmosis. And just because lasers were in their infancy 60yrs ago, doesn't mean that is the current state of affairs, nor that it will remain the state of affairs. In less than ten years we went from basically no laser weapons, to many. New technologies always suck and cost a lot in their infancy. Guided weapons were in their infancy in the 1950s and how many times did they declare teh age of guns over, only to have the missiles fail? Yet now, the age of the missile is actually here for real. It takes time to develop tech and work out the issues. Everything I said stands.

@raywhitehead730 In what way is anything I've said immature? You having to cite you dad for legitimacy is immature, if anything was. That's the type of thing I expect to here from college students, but not from people who can stand on their own merits. I've tested prototype weapons and equipment for the military on the battlefield, and designed technology for the gov/military, outside the military too, so what? Lots of people have been in/out of the military and work on military technologies. That doesn't make you right.

@McRocket Missiles are fragile too, which is exactly the sort of target these would be attacking. And what branch the laser is tested in is irrelevant. once developed and packaged small enough, it can fit on a plane. Look how fair lasers have come since the airborne laser project. look how small they are getting. Whether tested on the ground or in the air, it will get mounted to a fighter when small enough, and we're fast approaching that moment. But standing up a laser battalion shows lasers are being deployed in active service, in production quantity, and planes will have them sooner than later.

@McRocket Laser is a laser, it doesn't know which branch of service it's employed in. They have tested airborne lasers. Not put into production, but working airborne lasers. At the current rate of technological progress and size reduction, if you project that forward, they will become production units very soon. Given that the Army is able to install production units on a Stryker, and others have been tested on Humvees and such, it is getting into the range of being able to be mounted on a fighter already. And those lasers have been tested against rockets, drones, artillery, and so the anti-SAM, and anti-Air-to-air role is perfect for these lasers as well. The tech has been developed, and continues to shrink. It has been repeatedly tested, and is now being pushed into production in other roles. It's a mere matter of time now. Lots of development in laser tech right now. New tech always progresses slowly at first. But we're past that phase of evolution with lasers now.

@McRocket Because, your disbelief in the progression of technology requires a counter argument. Despite historical evidence to the contrary of technological development and adoption, you make the same claims many in history have made, and they were wrong. Given the current state of technology, it is inevitable now. Also, you don't get to decide who gets to comment. You can choose to stop yourself. So while you may decide you're done, you don't get to decide for me. When you dispute a idea, the other person gets to respond. You can disagree, ignore it...whatever.

@xmeda Current lasers and targeting systems already do all of those things. Vehicle mounted lasers have already been made and tested. If a Humvee can power a laser, then so can a jet engine.

@xmeda I never claimed fighter planes hunt Mach 4 missiles. Show yourself an example of your own ludicrous ideas. Now, for those who actually have some understanding of actual tactics, when attacking the enemy, and they fire missiles at you, and those missiles are hunting the Airplane, you shoot them down, regardless of Mach speed at time of destruction.

The laser can compensate for changes in the aircraft position, especially if tied into the flight controls, and any inertial navigation sensors.
