wrong. first the Wrights had no ability/authority/clout to suppress anything. Even the Wright's feat wasn't public knowledge until years later. Nobody has come anywhere close to the Wright Brothers. Even years after the Wrights, others had also independently achieved powered flight. But none were as capable as the Wrights even years later. Not one claim of powered flight prior to the Wrights has been substantiated.

@grizwoldphantasia5005 Yes, they need to include that boiler fuel weight as well. That was my first thought, what powers the boiler and how much do they carry in relation to teh water? So many details left unaddressed in this video. The total weight of fuel and engine matters for both propulsion types. But I bet the fuel for the boiler is far less than the water weight/volume. water weights more than fuel after all. 8lb/gal for water, 6lb/gal for fuel.

@brianb-p6586 that wiki article explains Nothing. How does a gas turbine jet engine propel an airplane without injecting furl into the engine? if all you're doing is providing heat for combustion, that's terribly inefficient for the weight penalty of the reactor. You're not going to generate enough reactor heat to ignite the air, and even if you did, the reactor itself would melt the airplane. If you're driving electric motors, then you are using steam power.

Up until now, you avoided, dodged, deflected. now, how much heat must a reactor generate to get the air hot enough to not need fuel? And how will such a hot reactor be contained within the airframe without melting the airframe nor starting it on fire? Point is, superheated air from a reactor generates steam in the turbine. Generating electricity from a reactor requires steam. Either way, it's steam power.

@nightshade4873 the test beds never actually achieved nuclear propulsion. they never got past merely carrying a reactor onboard. but you prove my point, they are steam powered.

@brianb-p6586 I read teh wiki, and it made no attemtp to describe the mechanism by which a gas turbine can provide sufficient thrust using a reactor alone. nor was such a feat ever attemtped. You don't owe me anything. But if you fail to defend your claims in debate, then you lose the debate.

@brianb-p6586 "the Wikipedia article explains everything" No, it 100% does not. it makes no attemtpt o explain how a gas turbine works using no fuel and only a reactor. But superheating teh air would make the turbine a steam turbine. "No one is using or has ever seriously proposed using electric propeller or fan drive in a nuclear-powered aircraft." same is true for a nuclear powered jet airplane. no one has ever attempted it, nor made a serious effort to attempt it.

@olpaint71 But is Charle's law enough to turn a jet engine? And when you heat up air, you create steam, thus the former gas turbine is now a steam turbine.

@olpaint71 "Steam is gas phase water. Air is mostly nitrogen." and water vapor, where do you think clouds, contrails, and vapor trails come from? And what temperature does air need to be heated to again, to run a gas turbine? How hot would the nuclear have to be to heat the air that much?

Yet it's never been done. and then you have to keep the heat from the reactor away from the rest of the aircraft. How do you plan ducting the reactor heat to the turbine? Good luck keeping the aircraft from melting or starting itself on fire at 1500F.

"Ader was not the only contender, there are others, some of which are plausible." no, none of the claims are plausible. All have been disproven definitively. Langley was closest, but it took modern engineers to fix all his issues. "The fact that he flew 8 years after the first time it was done and that 80 people had flown the Atlantic before him, was ignored." list the first 3 people then.... "The Brazilians maintain that Albert Santos-Dumont was the first, the French that it was Ader etc. " they are both wrong, and have been proven wrong. "Ader's claim is widely supported by aviation historians " no it's not. this is nothing but your unqualified and biased opinions. no facts, no names, no dates, no airplanes, no proof. just false claims. Historians, by definition, weren't there. they study things that happened, which they weren't present to witness. Someone who was not there cannot testify to that act having been done. And name one historian who claims they can substantiate Ader's claim.

3:30 100lb heavier? does this include fuel weight? because if you're counting the water weight, you need to count the fuel weight of the gasoline engine.

@brianb-p6586 Water is fuel. Without it, you aren't going anywhere. It is consumed and expelled just like fuel, and lightens the load as it's consumed. Apples to apples requires that the steam engine weight must include the engine, water and fuel. And the gasoline engine weight must include the engine and fuel.

@brianb-p6586 the heater for the water can be replaced by an electric heater. the "fuel" that propels the airplane is water. the expansion of water into high pressure steam is what turns the engine, and it was a consumable aboard the aircraft. and if you replaced the heater with an electric heater, you'd see the "fuel" is a misconception. it is necessary for the function of the engine to generate heat to create steam, but i does not require "fuel", it could even be a nuclear reactor. But the propulsion is provided by the steam. you've failed to disprove this fact.
