the garbage companies mix the stuff, don't blame the janitors. the recycling bit is a lie. they have machines that separate the stuff in trash cans at the recycling facilities.

@piter10p if it's sorted at the garbage facility, whether it's sorted at the disposal bins or not is irrelevant. you people fixate on all the wrong things. Pre-sorting is FAR more energy intensive and wasteful. requires less efficient sorting, requires extra trucks driving around using more energy to pick everything up. and people still put the wrong things in teh wrong bins as materials are complex and most people have no clue even if trying to do the "right thing", thus sorting must still take place at teh garbage facility regardless, consuming still more energy. A centralized sorting machine is far more efficient. So, if you "care about teh planet", you'd stop caring about pre-sorting out of ignorance, and start caring about just having the garbage facility sort it and stop virtue signaling.

@SmallSpoonBrigade the point is, it all goes in one machine, and they sort out the recyclable materials themselves anyways. they have to, as people put things that aren't recyclable in. The garbage companies do the sorting, so don't lose sleep over it.

NOBODY is going to spend millions of dollars on a robot to turn a $1 screwdriver, or operate a human-optimized kiosk. they are just going to design a FAR CHEAPER screwdriver robot or self-service/AI kiosk.

@SireBab growing up, the concept of separate recycling was just becoming a thing. Regardless, even if YOU did sorting properly, most everyone else is not, and so they have to sort the crap no matter what you do. And plenty of do-gooders like yourself unintentionally through all sorts of things into recycling that cannot be recycled. It's not your fault, it's the people coming up with complex mixtures of materials and adhesives and plastics that is making most things these days unrecyclable. And people put stuff in the bins they rightfully thought would be recyclable, but is not. Thus they have to sort everything Regardless what you do.

i stopped paying attention to ads many years ago. and I can say with 100% confidence they do not influence my purchases whatsoever. ads have just become part of the background to me, like leaves on a tree, you just stop seeing them after a while. And good companies and good products don't have to advertise, as people recommend them by word of mouth.

@muellernikolai8630 exactly my point. It's a waste of time and effort. it is only for making people feel good about themselves. it's an early form of virtue signaling. And it's a way for companies to charge more. Can't simply pay for garbage service, now you have to pay for recycling too, and oh by the way they expect YOU to do the work you're now paying Extra for. Work They are doing.

A) mix all your garbage, garbage company sorts it at their facility to separate refuse from recyclables. and further separates recyclables by material (plastic, paper, metal, glass, etc.) B) sort all your garbage, garbage company sorts it at their facility to separate refuse from recyclables. and further separates recyclables by material (plastic, paper, metal, glass, etc.) End result, nothing changed other than you wasting time and energy, everyone making 2x as many fossil fuel trash cans, and 2x as many trucks driving around every day picking up the garbage and recycling separately. My way is BETTER for the environment than your way.

Hence why it takes gov enforcement to keep capitalism alive. people will try to cheat teh system to create monopolies and anticompetitive behavior, but that is when gov is supposed to step in to prevent it, and ensure we remain capitalist. But the politicians personally profit by letting capitalism die. Corporatism is a form of socialism, in which gov picks winners and losers among private corporations, and has gov-sponsored monopolies. that is literally what socialism is all about.

got college for free by fighting in a few wars. ditched renting for a mortgage. hard work and a STEM degree got a higher wage, and there are other non-degree high paying jobs for those willing to work. Building a home for less by not building a luxury home.
