they are all pretty much teh same type of current laptop. they last ~30days before failing.

@paulmichaelfreedman8334 Yes, and so did Scott Manley. But they both missed the part where HPE has put new computers on the ISS and had them survive for years unhardened (been doing it since 2017). Off-the-shelf computers are expected to last no more than 30days on average, that's why they have so many laptops on teh station. They only use a handful at a time, and swap them out as they go bad. They have to make sure they have enough computers to last them between resupplies.

@dwmcever reliable, but don't last very long. And the computers HPE sent run Linux too. All of NASA's supercomputers run Linux too (supplied by SGI/HPE).

Tension stresses (catching it) vs compression stresses (landing on it's tail)

@ImpendingJoker HP inc laptops. Apple would fare no better

There were computers on the station that had CPUs and GPUs that were so new they had only just come on the market. Not radiation hardened, and they survived for years.

they already know how to do water landings. not much to learn their they don't already know.

@EddyKorgo I was referring more to the stresses on the skin and main body of the rocket. When landing on its tail, the rocket risks buckling under the weight and forces. But hanging from the grid fins puts most of the structure under tension as it comes to a stop. But maybe cables would be part of the catching structure as well, vs a landing pad.
