2 theories of wet weather outdoors (as far as I'm concerned). 1) accept that you will get wet, focus on staying warm and drying out quickly. 2) try to stay dry as best you can. I go for 1 more and more these days. And focusing on #1, makes #2 work that much better when you do it.

Bears: can climb trees Anyone who has hung bird feeders in rural bear country should know how hard it is to prevent a determined bear from getting to it. I've never once in my life used a bear bag or cannister, and lived most of my life in bear country and rural areas. People waste so much of their lives doing stupid things when we've survived for thousands of years without doing those things. the problem is people lack true survival sense and skills. it's a lot like water collection. I have filters, but thus far have never once filtered water. Unlike most people, I was actually taught how to source clean water from nature. I have drank from streams all my life, never once filtered the water, and never once gotten sick. Another factor is likely also being exposed to real life so much, I have an AMAZING immune system and almost never get sick and even the worst viruses and such never take me down. Perks of not being a hypochondriac and not fearing nature, and living as a creature of nature, in nature, with nature.

The more you know, the less you need. If you need a case study just look at tribal people, and the primitive technology channel on youtube. Gear just makes it easier by helping you survive without having to make all of it from scratch.

@clairevyanse5645 Yes, if you are helpless and fear the outdoors, you are free to live in fear your entire life and sit on the couch and live in a bubble of perceived safety. But some of us actually venture out into the real world, and sometimes have no choice whether we must face the elements. Life happens, whether you like it or not. And knowing how to handle it can save your life. Exposure can kill in hours, and people who aren't mentally incapacitated by their fear can handle that reality.

@clairevyanse5645 No, I will never shut up. The only mouth you can control is your own, might want to look to that. For one, it's not your comment thread. And since you're not a hiker, backpacker or "bushwacker" and never leave your home, your comment is meaningless. 60lbs? lightweight wimps. What does weight have to do with anything anyways? How would you know what 60lbs is like if you never leave your house? You do realize that this applies to everyone who goes outside in the rain or other wet weather conditions, right? But then again, how could you? You never leave your house.

not fair to judge wood stoves on their boiling time. It's not a race to eat at the end of a day's hike. The time to boil metric is to compare efficiency, which translates to fuel volume/weight required. With a wood stove, you're not carrying the fuel, and so this metric holds no value.

learn about sleeping on the floor properly. you'll realize sleeping on hard surfaces is beneficial once you get used to it, and if on your back you don't need a pillow at all.
