  2. US military used this wool layering system of clothing right up until the early 2000s. Wool socks, clothing, and then the infamous scratchy wool "bear suit". WWI soldiers survived in the trenches with wool uniforms and trench coats.

  3. the single biggest advantage is acclimating to your climate. I sometimes shovel my driveway in winter wearing just a t-shirt and tennis shoes. no gloves, no hat, no jacket....once I'm acclimated, I've been outside in 32F (0C) weather for 20-30min at a time just fine, and even came back inside sweating. Working helps keep body temp up, and there are tricks to keeping your fingers warm too.
