The American Civil War was fought over an expansion of slavery to states newly entering the union and a containment of slavery to the states wherein slavery already existed. Indeed, Lincoln's twin goals were a preservation of the union and a containment of slavery. Lincoln felt a diplomatic initiative to contain slavery was preferable to war. He felt the institution of slavery would pass with time. If the South had agreed to Lincoln's diplomatic initiative rather than firing on Fort Sumter, there would have been no civil war. The civil war was fought over containment versus expansion - over a slave based economy and the lifestyle this afforded and an industrial based economy that was emerging in the North.
