Productivity doesn't rely on the output of workers alone. The British worker is unlucky to have bosses who are don't want to train or up skill their workers. That together with low capital investment, because speculation to drive up share prices is less risky, and immediately rewarding to management that can benefit from share options means less new technology to drive up production. And workplace cultures aren't productive either with presenteeism commonplace and low incentives from firms. Indeed, if working on minimum wage means cannot meet one's basic needs to function effectively in society with one job, at which one is supposed to give one's all is counter productive. Mr Philip's critique is unrealistic. People work longer hours and get less in return relative to the Workers in the UK peers group. And we must be working hard to produce so many more millionaires every year... So I suggest Mr Philp should work harder to develop a realistic and grounded analysis of productivity, where both firms and workers have less reason to feel shortchanged. Perhaps Germany and France could teach us a thing or two? After all, despite recent setbacks, their economies are still outperforming ours whilst working less hours? Why can't we learn from our peers? They've certainly learn from us what not to do it seems.
