Relative poverty is being poor relative to everyone else in a specific and defined group. It's a realistic form of looking at poverty, because it defines more clearly how poverty differs in different economies, and why saying globalisation pulled so many millions of people out of poverty is seen as akin to virtue signalling. For example, they are homeless people in Tokyo, San Francisco, Paris, London, and say Mumbai. Living on $2 a day might be easier in Mumbai because the cost of living is far lower. But in the other cities might be low enough to starve. So the cost of living in an economy defines the levels of poverty in it, so on this sense poverty is relative to the purchasing power of a currency, and the amount available to the poor within their economy.
