GDP is really less useful that GDI metrics. GDP measures productivity which may, or may not translate in higher incomes for employees. Indeed, looking at the disparity between GDP growth rates and the Labour Share of GDP percentage rates, the latter has been declining relative to the former in the UK over the last 5 decades at least. Hence the increasing wealth inequality in the UK. And GDI metrics at least provides some indication of how much employers might be able to pay their workers. Our current administration, which has just called a general election, is fond of saying that they have made "work pay." But that claim is accompanied by increasing numbers of the families of Asset Limited, Income Constrained Employees (ALICEs) earning so little and having to apply for Universal Credit and Housing. Benefit. According to The Local Authority Association's online database nearly 1/3rd of such families' incomes are being subsidised in this way. And the number is increasing... That should be an unacceptable state of affairs when many large employers are reporting record profits. But somehow, our government is too busy polishing gongs to notice.
