Perverse incentives exist. Engagement = eyes on content, and numbers of comments =proof of engagement which justifies price of advertising. Remove the bots it's not inconceivable engagement falls significantly, and advertising rates would have to go down to compensate. All digital platforms are pricing advertising on that basis, so I wouldn't hold my breath unless regulation comes in to force platforms to actually remove spam and scams. And there are virtually no barriers to entry for spammers. You can get a board with 20 sim slots that can run from a single smartphone or laptop sim slot, for about €25 online several years ago. So... We are where we are.
