It's common to speak of progress as a straight line, but that's a illusion. It's a very human trait to have priorities that create problems for every one else but that those who benefit from those priorities. Ultimately, then the common outcome is that we do anything else but what we know is best thing to do. And reality is only a harsh mistress when you ignore her.
