As you don't KNOW - I mean have no cited evidence for the exact reason why BIS voluntarily designates gold as a Tier 1 asset - the answer to your own question, perhaps you should ask BIS? It could be nothing more than tradition, rather than any economic or financial benefit. But you don't know that do you?
