  1. The quality of the bots in this comment thread is really contributing to the enshittification of social media. In trumpeting ideas alien to the UK you reveal yourselves as ignorant and foolish. There isnt much serious discussion grounded in the British experience. No historical grounding at all. Just a load of bots pushing their masters arrogant and ignorant agendas. How sad. What is needed is not copying the crows of the peacocks or the plutocratic sirens, but to to give people what they did have once, which is Responsive government that is less centralised and more professional. Outsourcing has failed because greed is part of the human condition, and regulatory capture. And these need to be addressed. Public service should be treated as a profession, and be as demanding as the medical profession in its demands for competence. And we should recruit accordingly, and be trained adequately. Something that is a problem in both the private and public sectors. Management is woefully under qualified, and leadership is often lacking. It can be better, but not straight away. Or quickly, unless there is reform at the top. The fish does indeed rot from the head.
