Labour Market policy in the UK is incoherent, and so politicised, it's stopped making sense. Election cycle-driven, knee-jerk reactive thinking isn't helping. The same applies to the Education and industrial policy domains as well. Market-driven solutions don't work by themselves to get the best economic outcomes. The state has to create the conditions so market failure can be avoided. And the problem is that we are employing politicians that have no idea about anything else, but getting elected. This is why I am sceptical about political parties being reliant on donors to get elected, because the donors set the agenda, which might make things worse in the end. And that's what we are seeing at work here. I'm pessimistic whether that tendency can be overcome.
