British universities rely on foreign students paying more than 2x the fees British students pay. Accordingly the current government has cut the support to our universities over the last few years. Now, to save themselves from electoral decimation, the Tories put up this plan to give red meat to their base, but no more funding to make up the loss of income from foreign students... How will that maths problem work out? Either British student fees will have to increase, or the universities that have no other means to make up their deficits will cut their provision, or go out of business altogether. If you want British universities for British students only, those students are going to have to pay a lot more. How are they going to do that when the pay for graduates is falling? And AI will snuff out the vast majority of Knowledge economy jobs within the next 20 years or so? And it won't only impact the universities, but the local economies around them too. How do we make up for the lost capacity? Unfortunately, yet again, nobody in government really has a plan except to save their careers.
