  1.  @hule8899  I ended up going with OPNsense for my setup because they still had 32-bit support so I could use an old laptop. I had previously tried pfSense in a VM and seem to remember having a harder time with the configuration interface.

  2. There are a few instances where your public IP appears unblurred and a few more with your ISP gateway. But that doesn't matter because they change. P.S.: If you update a dynamic DNS entry with your public IP, don't publish that domain name if you want to keep that IP hidden.

  3. A huge advantage of pfSense and friends over any dedicated device I could find is the ability to use hostnames in firewall rules.

  4. It sounds like you only changed the firewall's upstream DNS server. If you go into the DHCP server settings page you should be able to change the DNS server clients look to.
