  2. 3D printers will likely play a greater role. Already you can get a printer for $200 which produces decent results out of the box without any tuning. The hard part is creating 3D models but this is much easier than designing parts for traditional manufacturing. Regarding electronics, there are already established projects like Megasquirt and Speeduino which can replace engine management computers.
