I see that working about as well as demanding that smartphones have headphone jacks. Consumer pressure only works when there is more competition.

@NeilHaskins DP also supports HDCP.

@Bigoukun Due to its analog nature VGA can work fine for HDR. Problem is nobody implements it.

It doesn't matter if we use HDMI or not, it only matters if the ports are present. And I had the same thought about shipping less expensive HDMI-less models. I suppose as the chip provider they could ship all future GPUs without HDMI and card manufacturers could add an onboard bridge chip if desired. And while they can't have an "HDMI" port without paying the forum I believe they could have unbranded 19-pin TMDS video connectors which happen to be compatible with HDMI displays, at least for standard 1080p.

Not quite true. DVI was around before HDCP and the benefit is you get a pixel-perfect transmission to a dot-matrix display. If you notice on any LCD monitor the VGA input goes right into a video ADC.

If the required code is an open source driver it would be easier for anybody to make an HDMI 2.1 compatible device. Then small companies could learn how to make HDMI-compatible gizmos without paying licensing fees.
