  1. I have my laptop brightness set to 13/80 on its arbitrary scale which is plenty bright for me sitting next to a window. Putting it up to full brightness makes it look nice when sitting in direct sunlight but that's not how I use it. I think I have all my CCFL-lit LCDs set to at most half. Even most CRTs at full brightness are a bit too much unless very worn.

  2. Don't modern smartphones still have screen brightness controls? My LG V20 is a bit old now but on minimum brightness it's dark enough for nighttime use. Some devices scale the brightness setting so "0%" is still bright and these designers should be reprimanded. I'll give an exception to CCFL-based or similar displays where there is a minimum brightness but LED-backlit and OLED displays can dim to zero.
